Welcome To Crypto Resync

Welcome to the opening of Crypto Resync, a blog dedicated to information systems security, privacy, your rights online and other similar topics. The goal of Crypto Resync is to attempt to help educate the average computer user about computer related security matters.

Much of my inspiration, for this blog in particular, comes from cryptologist Bruce Schneier. I was first introduced to the genius that is Bruce many years ago, when I was becoming interested in computer programming. A project I was working on required some encryption so I bought his book Applied Cryptography. It was an immense help then and still is today.

I imagine that a number of people are wondering where the name “Crypto Resync” comes from. The origin of the name is related to hardware based cryptographic devices. Hardware based encryption devices are employed in order to secure point-to-point data and voice communication channels from prying eyes and ears. These devices need to be “in sync” in order to properly communicate with each other.

At times, for a variety of reasons, these devices lose synchronization and need to be reinitiated in order to resume communication and restore access to the channel. The act of reinitiating a hardware cryptographic device is also known as “resyncing the crypto.” It is a term widely used throughout telecommunications and one of the first troubleshooting mechanisms during a channel outage.

But I digress.

The computer is a tool that has become completely integrated in to our lives over the course of recent years. The average consumer has no idea about computer security and, realistically speaking, does not need to be an expert but definitely needs to know the basics. By helping Joe User become educated about computer security best practices we can slash the number of incidents that we read about each and every day.

Adhering to, and paying attention to, computer security is truly not that difficult. This is all a balancing act, weighing between convenience and security. Most people will opt for convenience because it helps them achieve a goal that much easier. In the end, however, the same goal can be reached in just as efficient a manner all while keeping computer security in mind.

All it takes is a culture change. This is probably the hardest task of all.

Hopefully, with a little bit of work, I can help educate a small number of people about the positives of computer security. For every individual that learns something positive by visiting Crypto Resync I expect that they will tell a friend and, with a small amount of help from the cascading effect, the world will slowly become better informed.

I am merely posting this comment in order to resolve the issue with the “recent comments” plug-in not being able to locate any comments at all.
